Right Grades for Fastener Tooling

Choosing the wrong carbide grade costs more than buying cheap tooling.

Many fastener manufacturers focus on price and lead time when sourcing carbide dies — grabbing whatever grade seems "hard enough" and moving on.

That decision quietly erodes margin every single production run.

Here's the real issue.

Cemented carbide performance comes down to two parameters: hardness (HRA) and cobalt content (Co%). Hardness drives wear resistance. Cobalt drives toughness. They work against each other — the harder the grade, the more brittle it becomes.

Different fastener applications pull these parameters in completely opposite directions.

Precision wire and rod drawing demands high hardness (HRA 88–89.5) to hold dimensional tolerances under sustained tensile stress. A lower Co content (9–15%) is entirely sufficient for that load profile. But heavy-duty nut and bolt forging is the opposite — large deformation, high impact, serious cracking risk. You need Co content up around 23–27% to absorb that energy. Run a precision drawing grade in a heavy forging die and you can cut tool life in half before you even notice the pattern.

Stainless steel fasteners add another variable that hardness alone cannot solve: galling. At high-speed cold heading speeds, stainless material welds microscopically to the die surface, causing dimensional drift and surface tearing on the part. The fix isn't a harder grade — it's an anti-galling formulation (HVA80) specifically engineered to resist adhesion.

The return on getting this right is measurable.

Longer die life. Less frequent die changes. Fewer unplanned stoppages. Lower cost per million parts produced. Grade selection is not a technical footnote — it is a cost decision that compounds across every production batch.

The difference between the right grade and the almost-right grade shows up in your tooling budget by end of quarter.
